Funny, I was going to ask exactly the two questions posted above, only not necessarily in that order.

We must support these brothers and sisters because they want what we want, PEACE, LAND, AND FREEDOM. Only the fascist pigs and the revisionist scum will try to break this movement.

I believe the dude with the chest is a very famous traditional musician. Don’t remember his name. I vaguely remember reading an interview of him. Maybe someone else remembers.

Eric’s right, that’s Gaddar. He’s a Telengana “balladeer,” who sings folk songs “I believe” in Telugu, Gondi (an adivasi language) and possibly others in support of Adivasi, Telengana and other people’s rights and in effect on behalf of the CPI (Maoist)’s self-avowed revolutionary struggle. I believe those photos are from one of the last 2 ceasefire periods (2002 or 2004) in Andhra Pradesh between the state government and the party, when they were engaged in a negotiation process and could in effect organize in the open for the first time in many years. I believe the 04 rally had 300-400,000 people in Hyderabad.

because liveblogging from rethinking marxism would have been an awful idea.

Yup….
Quite a few of our Kasama moderators were at the Rethinking Marxism conference (amherst Mass, friday, sat, sunday) — which was quite an interesting and positive event.
People who participate here on Kasama presented at quite a few panels — and we hope to post some of that soon. It may take a day or two to get back into a groove.

Maoists symbolically announce Kirant federal state
Monday, 09 November 2009 21:43
Unified CPN (Maoist) politburo member Gopal Kiranti has symbolically declared a Kirant federal state comprising of eight eastern mountainous districts, Bhojpur, Khotang, Udaypur, Okhaldhunga, Solukhumbu and Sankhuwasabha, in Diktel, Monday.
Kiranti, also the coordinator of Kirant State People’s Movement Committee, declared the federal state without the names of officials, before a mass gathering organised in Khotang district headquarter Diktel.
CA members, central and regional leaders of UCPN (Maoist) and its sister organisations and locals from various villages in Khotang and Bhojpur were present at the mass gathering. They had rallied around Diktel before the gathering.
Addressing the mass gathering, Kiranti said, patriot people of all castes who can internalise religious harmony and fight against foreign intervention can live in Kirant Federal State.
Feudals, Indian expansionists and American imperialists will not be allowed in Kirant federal state, he said adding no one would be not be allowed there.
Although Kirant Federal State is being announced from Diktel, an appropriate capital for the state is still being considered, Kiranti said. Pandhare of Khotang district is one of the possibilities, he said.
Kiranti also claimed he had taken permission from party chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal to symbolically announce the Kirant Federal State. Some reports say, he called the party chairman from the programme venue and informed the latter of the announcement of the federal state.
UCPN (Maoist), which is agitating against the President’s move to block the erstwhile government’s decision to sack former army chief Rookmangud Katawal, had withdrawn its programme to declare federal states citing lack of preparation last week.
Kiranti said at the mass gathering, his party had put off the programme as officials for all federal states had not been fixed. Federal units will be announced once the names of the officials are determined, he added. nepalnews.com
